June 2011 Class 704 got to blow bubbles in math class with Ms. Semlies and Mr. Berger. As part of a bubble blowing contest, students were placed in teams and blew bubbles directly onto brown craft paper that was placed on the tables in the library. (If you let the bubbles sit for a moment before you pop them, they leave a good amount of residue- in the shape of a perfect circle) The teams were given 10 minutes to blow the largest bubbles that they could, and they measuredthe radii of each, while tracking the data in a chart. After the initial bubbles were blown, each team calculated the area and circumference of their five largest bubbles. They then found the measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode and range) of their data sets. The winning team received pencils and bragging rights, but every student went home with their own container of bubbles. This turned out to be a lot of fun for all of us, the adults included, and it was much less messy than I anticipated! A special thanks to Mr. Lee, who was kind enough to come by to take pictures for us!

Skype Session with Westhampton Beach Free Library
Sixth graders from Ms. Howard's art classes created mixed-media works depicting New York, incorporating surrealist elements. Their work was on exhibit in Westhampton's library for the entire month of May, and they attended a Skype session with librarian Leslie Millrod, who took them on a tour of the facility and allowed them to see their work on display in the children's room. The artists received prizes and certificates during the artist reception/Skype session, which took play on May 27th in the IS 302 media center.
